A number of art scholars have remarked on the incidental associations between the work of Clarice Beckett and Mark Rothko. They, of course, had nothing to do with one another, save that they both understood the dramatic effects of colour as a form of central meaning with figures and images of light fading away. This connection is well shown here with some examples of the drenched colour of Beckett from an exhibition at the Geelong Art Gallery and the Rothko at the NGV with only drenched colour and no figures at all.
